Upcoming DVD Releases

Credit crunch or not there are some fantastic Cult DVD releases on the way and in case you've missed some of them here is a rundown of what is on the horizon!

The She-Beast (Dark Sky)

"A small town in 18th century Transylvania is being terrorized by an evil witch. When a child is brutally attacked, the villagers capture the fiend and sentence her to death by dunking chair, but not before she casts a curse on them and their descendants. Two hundred years later, young newlyweds Veronica (Barbara Steele, Black Sunday) and Philip (Ian Ogilvy, And Now The Screaming Starts) pass through the town on a tour of the Carpathians, only to have their car pulled into a lake by an unseen force . A passing truck driver quickly rescues two bodies from the wreck. One is Philip, battered but alive, and the other is...the witch, back from the dead to wreak havoc on the town once again! Can Philip and his newfound friend, the great grandson of Professor Van Helsing, capture the witch and bring back Veronica?"

Four Flies on Grey Velvet (Mya)

Roberto (Michael Brandon) is a young handsome drummer playing in a rock band. For the last week he has been stalked by a mysterious guy with dark sunglasses. Roberto decides to put an end to this and follows his stalker in a deserted theatre. He confronts the man and accidentally kills him.

At the same time, another mysterious stalker, with a weird mask, appears and takes pictures of the accidental murder. For Roberto and his girlfriend Mina (Mimsy Farmer) it's the beginning of a nightmare, and more murders will ensue soon.

Four Flies on Grey Velvet is the last film of Dario Argento's so called "Animal Trilogy". Beside being a true classic of the Giallo genre, this is by far the rarest of Argento's movies, since it had meyer been officially released before, in any form anywhere.

Now Four Flies on Grey Velvet finally returns, fully uncut and with an astounding picture and sound quality. A long and accurate restoration work was made directly on the original negative elements which had remained untouched for more than 30 years.

Get ready to watch Four Flies on Grey Velvet as you have never watched it before!

DVD Trash's Top Ten Movies of 2008

It's been a good year for movies and I've been to the cinema a lot, which means a film has really piqued my interest, and although I'm a horror fan mainly, I like just about any genre except musicals (no Mamma Mia here!), so my list is wide as it varied!

10. There Will Be Blood
Very Oscar worthy with great performances all round!

9. No Country for Old Men
Again, very Oscar friendly movie, but again richly deserved for the performances, especially Javier Bardem!

8. Juno
Very enjoyable little flick, despite the dialogue being too clever for its own good at times, but winning points with me for the Dario Argento and HG Lewis references!

7. Rambo
What a blast! There are no exploitation movies anymore, but this as close as your going to get to get to one in 2008! Lashings of violence and Stallone can still cut it!

6. A L'intérieur
Great French shocker that has more atmosphere than most and it was very nice to see Beatrice Dalle once again.

5. The Mist
Great adaption of a Steven King novel, that certainly did not do Hollywood endings, genuinely shocking!

4. Gomorrah
Fantastic movie about the Naples mafia in Italy, the Soprano's it ain't, its gritty and almost documentary like to watch. This is what the real Mafia are like, no horses heads here!

3. Iron Man
Great adaption of the Marvel character and Robert Downey Jr. nails Tony Stark. This could easily have misfired, but is now one the best superhero flicks ever!

2. The Wrestler
Mickey Rourke is back and how, with a Golden Globe win and Oscar buzz, but this film captures accurately the wrestling world once the glitz of the WWE is behind you! A must see!

1. The Dark Knight
What more can be said about this film! A nigh on perfect adaptation of the caped crusader, with great performances from Aaron Eckhart and especially Heath Ledger as the Joker. If you don't own a copy yet then go get one!

Ebay Shenanigans!

Ebay have annoyed me again tonight by asking me to remove one of my DVD auctions for "Box of the Banned" which contains "I Spit on your Grave", although a UK disc by Anchor Bay and legally available in the UK, ebay think the film is distasteful so no go from them! I wrote back enquiring why they are selling 47 copies of "Cannibal Holocaust" which is both banned and contains animal cruelty! Not holding my breath for a reply!

Anyway, it got me thinking, how great the VHS covers were for these movies and it made me remember scouring Azad Video and petrol stations with my grandfather, who would let me rent anything, and marvelling at these covers and what wonders actually lay beneath them! So after a quick stumble about the 'net, I found a few that always turned my head! That cover for Lamberto Bava's "Demons" always made me cack my pants, but I always looked at the back cover everytime I went in, but always too scared to rent it!!

DVD Release: Cat in the Brain

More Fulci madness from Grindhouse Releasing! Looking forward to this release very much and it should be an improvment over the UK Hardgore release!

Grindhouse:

"Grindhouse Releasing and Box Office Spectaculars are proud to present the North American DVD premiere of Italian horror maestro Lucio Fulci's ultra-violent classic CAT IN THE BRAIN.

The late, great Lucio Fulci is revered by horror movie fans around the world as the Italian "Godfather of Gore" for directing such films as ZOMBIE, THE BEYOND, and THE GATES OF HELL. CAT IN THE BRAIN is Fulci's ultimate statement about his own work, a masterpiece of cinematic dementia that echoes Hitchcock's PSYCHO, William Castle's STRAIT-JACKET, David Lynch's ERASERHEAD and Fellini's 8 1/2.

CAT IN THE BRAIN stars Fulci as himself in the twisted tale of a horror film director driven insane by his own creations. Tormented by visions of bizarre violence, murder and mayhem, Fulci seeks help from a sinister psychiatrist who draws him into a vortex of madness and death....like a cat, stalking the darkest corridors of the director's mind and clawing his sanity to bloody shreds.

Since its original release in 1990, CAT IN THE BRAIN has become a sought-after gem for Fulci fanatics, difficult to find and banned in the UK for its extreme graphic violence. The movie has won acclaim from modern masters of the macabre including Clive Barker and Eli Roth, director of HOSTEL and CABIN FEVER.

Grindhouse Releasing's deluxe edition of CAT IN THE BRAIN boasts a high-definition, widescreen anamorphic transfer of Fulci's uncensored director's cut, along with an amazing collection of bonus features.

Produced by Bob Murawski, the film editor of Sam Raimi's SPIDER-MAN 1, 2 & 3 and ARMY OF DARKNESS, this long-awaited release continues the commitment to excellence that established Grindhouse as a leader in the horror DVD market with its definitive editions of THE BEYOND, I DRINK YOUR BLOOD, PIECES, and CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST."

The 2-disc CAT IN THE BRAIN collector's set includes:

  • An eye-popping, psychedelic lenticular 3-D cover, limited to the first 2,500 units only!
  • Never-before-seen, in-depth interviews with Lucio Fulci and star Brett Halsey (REVENGE OF THE CREATURE, RETURN OF THE FLY, GODFATHER 3)
  • English and original Italian-language soundtracks
  • Lucio Fulci's heroic appearance at the 1996 FANGORIA Weekend of Horrors in New York City
  • An extensive gallery of stills and poster art from around the world
  • Exclusive liner notes by Antonella Fulci, acclaimed horror novelist David J. Schow, and director Eli Roth
  • Original theatrical trailer

Isle of the Damned

Coming soon is the DVD Review of "Isle of the Damned" from Direwit Films, a glorious take, shall we say, of the great Italian Cannibal genre of the late 70's!
