Box Office: Meet the Spartans nudges Rambo to No.2

Bit of a rant coming up, but how does total garbage like "Meet the Spartans" (from the creators of other classics "Date Movie" and "Epic Movie") beat Stallones other great creation "Rambo" to the No.1 spot at the US Box Office. Ok it only edged out the Italian Stallion by $300,000, but c'mon! How do you even goto the cinema and even be able to ask for tickets to such trash and not be embarassed. Ok, ok, Rambo is no Truffaut or Bunuel, but its a back to basics all out 80's style shoot 'em up that delivers unlike the PG-13 rated version of "Die Hard 4.0" Just hope word of mouth and the fairly good reviews manage to rectify the situation and get John Rambo to No.1!

Film Drunk on "Atonement"

Film Drunk (great film site btw), recently vented it's displeasure at Keira Knightley's, 7 Oscar nominated movie "Atonement" wondering why it had even been nominated!

Check it out:

"The Oscar nominations are out, and Atonement trailed only There Will Be Blood and No Country for Old Men (who had eight each) with seven nominations. I dunno, maybe I'm crazy. Maybe stuff actually happening in a movie is too much to ask.

UPDATE: Lest you be tempted to see Atonement to see why I hate it so much (which would sort of defeat the purpose), allow me to summarize it for you:

James McAvoy works as a servant boy at Keira Knightley's house. He breaks her vase. He accidentally sends her a letter saying "I want to kiss your hot, wet, c*nt" instead of the apology letter he meant to send (a lá Road Trip). She reads the note and then bones him because she's a slut. Her younger sister sees them boning and thinks he raped her so she accuses him of rape and he gets sent away. Three years later he joins the army because all armies need someone who knows how to rape chicks and she becomes an army nurse because she wants to see him, because sluts who bang a guy once always wait chastely for three years until he gets out of prison. They meet up. Then later, after they're married, the younger sister comes to apologize and he's all like, naw, whatever bitch. Then it cuts to years later and the younger sister is an old lady now (you can tell it's the same person because of the stupid haircut and mole - chicks generally have the same hairstyle their whole lives), and she's doing an interview about the book she wrote, which tells the story we just watched, and she says that she made it all up and her sister and the dude actually both died in the war. So exciting! So epic!"

RIP: Heath Ledger

Very sad news indeed, a very young actor (29) and it looked as though his role as "The Joker" in the upcoming "The Dark Knight" could have been his best yet!

Source: SKY News

"A spokesman said Ledger had an appointment for a massage at the apartment in the trendy SoHo neighbourhood.

The housekeeper went to tell Ledger the masseuse had arrived and found him dead.

The 28-year-old Australian-born actor received an Oscar nomination for the hit film Brokeback Mountain.

Ledger met his wife, actress Michelle Williams, on the set in 2005.

They lived in Brooklyn and had a daughter, Matilda, but split up last year.

A crowd of paparazzi and onlookers gathered outside the building on Tuesday evening, where several police officers guarded the door.

Ledger played the suicidal son of Billy Bob Thornton in Monster's Ball and had starring roles in A Knight's Tale and The Patriot.

He was to appear as the Joker this year in the latest Batman movie, The Dark Knight, a sequel to 2005's Batman Begins.

Sky's entertainment correspondent Matt Smith said: "He was not someone who troubled the headlines - he and his partner kept out of the limelight."

Paura: Lucio Fulci Remembered

"During down time as Supplement Producers for Media Blasters’ Shriek Show line of DVD releases, Mike Baronas & Kit Gavin walked from one end of Rome to the other interviewing folks for a massive Lucio Fulci book of the same name that was to serve as a companion piece to Stephen Thrower’s Beyond Terror.

With that project currently in publishing purgatory, Baronas decided to compile the 4 years worth of on-camera interviews he had accumulated and create this tribute DVD to his long-beloved director and to fans of Fulci’s work in the hope of shedding some light on who really he was, what he was like to work with and what he means to Italian cinema’s rich history."

A really nice DVD to pick up here folks, especially as Kit Gavin is someone I've talked to quite a bit about Euro Cinema. The DVD is available in 3 flavours, $25 (DVD standalone), $35 (autographed by Giovanni Lombardo Radice) or $275 (Collectors DVD plus the autographs of around 50 EuroCult legends)

The DVD is available now from HERE

Better late than never...

Finally got the DVD's I ordered in Amazon's Black Friday sale from way back in November, with "Volver" (hence the gratuitous Penelope Cruz image), "The Lives of Others" and "300" safely added to the collection. Strangely the Raquel Welch western, "Hannie Caulder" took only a few days to arrive from Oz, very odd! Finally the already infamous "Four Flies on Grey Velvet" has also arrived from Tony at Xploited, so a nice weekends viewing is in order!
