The Movie
“The vernacchio is produced by the vibration of the tongue on the lips,” demonstrates the sweaty teacher to his (scantily-clad) student with gusto. If you thought the above referred to a lewd deed, you are symptomatic of the condition affecting most of Italian society according to this 1974 film- a dirty mind, or ‘Sex In The Head’ as the title literally translates. For the gentleman is referring to the creation of a certain type of fart noise, acceptable to be used in the presence of ladies and archbishops. The innuendo is apt: not only does it court a sex-addled imagination but the lip-smacking trumpeting could be seen as an auto-erotic substitute for an oral act of coitus. (If you think I’m delving too deep into the film’s unconscious, feel free to practice your own vernacchio now.) Italian Sex is thus a surreal exposé of the prurient psyche of modern life, the feisty fantasies and pulsing perversity that seep beneath a routine bit of how’s-yer-father. Homoeroticism, sex with nuns, incest, necrophilia; it’s all here in a film that would make Alfred Kinsey blush.
Similar to that prominent sexologist, sociology student Diana Tornetti (Velázquez) has decided to research the wanton desires of Italian men for her PhD dissertation. Her methodology is one of strenuous fieldwork, going undercover as a prostitute for three eventful months. Before she can be awarded her doctorate, she must relate her exploits to an academic board, comprised of a flustered vicar, a monocled aristocrat and one prudish woman who chokes violently at the mere mention of the word “enticement”, presided over by the great Italian smut star Lino Banfi. Consequently, her encounters are presented as episodic vignettes as if they were chapters from her thesis. Brimming with colourful characters and bawdy burlesque, Sergio Ammirata’s only film as director (with veteran Fernando Vacanze Per Un Massacro Di Leo providing uncredited ‘academic’ supervision) plays like an Italian version of a British sex romp; heck, it could be called Confessions Of A Post-Grad. Or Carry On Swotting.
Inevitably, the content of her thesis is hit and miss. Some sequences are very funny, if based around a single punch-line: a camp hotel waiter (played by Ammirata himself) only poses as a homosexual so that women will crave sex with him in order to cure him of his ‘deviance’; an impotent Mafioso, Frank, has to slap his women around to protect his macho image; and a decidedly ugly man, who looks like a cross between Frank Zappa and Bruce Forsyth, reveals only after he has had sex with our heroine that the money he proffered was a gift from her mother.
The film is at its best with scenes that rock with a dark undertow below the comic bounce of the carnal capers: a recent widower attempts to seduce Diana while his wife lies embalmed in a coffin next door- when she scarpers he looks at his ex and proclaims, “You’re ruining me even in death, huh? Go to hell twice.” This evidence leads our student to surmise that men take pleasure “to profane every sacred thing”. In another episode, what appears to be a traffic jam turns out to be a queue of men waiting to drill a nun; as she lifts her habit, Ammarita shoots through her legs capturing the look of nervous excitement on the punter’s face. Not only does this link voyeurism with forbidden privilege, but the camera position also reflects Diana’s desire to examine the world from a different angle, one that sprouts from the loins.
The licentious fantasy and libidinous technique on display is crystallised in the performance of Velázquez. Donning multi-coloured wigs and negligees like a hyperactive cabaret star, her energy and humour toward her predicaments is what gives Italian Sex its distinctive honours. As the horrified splutters of the judging panel transform into approving coos, the film itself further loosens up and plunges into manic surrealism: one of the clients is a deranged man in a Mickey Mouse jumper who, it is claimed, has wandered in from another film; Ms. Torrentini acts as a stage manager to a bizarre piece of physical theatre with thriving naked lesbians accompanied by wild animal noises, all watched by a horde of ageing critics, scrutinising the participants through opera glasses and taking detailed notes. Sex is a theatre of the absurd, full of exaggerated role-play, styled (and stylised) perversity, and performed with a cheeky self-awareness.
After Frank has executed his wife-beating charade, he looks into a mirror and blows a raspberry at his own spurious image. Likewise, Italian Sex irreverently trumps a cloud of spittle on the cultural portrait of a wholesome, chaste society. We all secretly enjoy a healthy vibration of the tongue on the lips.
The Disc
Presented in 1.85:1 letterboxed widescreen, the transfer is decent with colours bright and suggestive. Only minor pops and scratches evident from the source material. Contrast is good, with the stylish black and white décor of Diana’s apartment room looking particularly ravishing; however, some of the detail in the darker scenes is fuzzy. Audio-wise, the Dolby Digital mono mix is in Italian with removable subtitles in English. Some of these are riddled with grammatical errors, which add to the sense of chaos: “He took me in a desert place” (she’s not referring to bedding Bedouins). No extras, perhaps unsurprisingly for a release of a fairly niche title.

In Reflections of Light Gabriele Tinti plays a self pitying musical composer confined to a wheelchair surrounded by his son, second wife and lesbian secretary who are all up to naughty shenanigans. That’s it. Nothing much of a plot and it all is just a premise to show as much soft sex as possible. The script writers did not even make much of the fact that Tinti’s condition is meant to be primarily psychological. At the start of the film I could have sworn that at one stage he’d be kicked out of the wheelchair to walk again, but surprisingly enough none of that ever happens.
Then again you don’t watch an Italian sex drama of the 1980s for anything resembling a decent story line. I must have watched dozens of those in my time and can seriously not remember anything from these movies and doubt that I’ll remember much of Reflections of Light in, ooh, say two hours time either.
What these kinds of movies did do, however, was to install an eternal love for Italian soft bodies in me. And this film is no different: The ladies are drop dead gorgeous and have enough incidences of accidentally revealing their boobies, splashing themselves in naughty water fights or engaging in Sapphic delights that I for one found time was passing quickly enough watching the movie.
For a change Gabriele Tinti plays the lead and his real-life wife Laura Gemser only second fiddle. Tinti and Gemser were in scores of films together until Tinti’s untimely death in the early 90s when Gemser subsequently gave up filming altogether.
In Reflections of Light Gemser appears as Tinti’s character’s first wife in a couple of flashbacks and also features in one of the worst deaths by capable swimmer in shallow water scenes ever.
This is quite obviously a bargain basement production with only a handful of actors and most scenes shot in the grounds of just one Italian villa (my hunch: the producer’s). Nevertheless this is shot quite stylishly and you’ll easily forget the low production values.
Mario Bianchi who churned out scores of these types of movies under a dozen different pseudonyms directs and the only name actor of sorts (apart from Tinti and Gemser) is Jessica Moore as the son’s love interest who for a short period was somewhat of a trash movie star following Joe D’Amato’s 11 Days 11 Nights/Top Model films.
If you’ve seen only one of this style of movies before you know what to expect: Love scenes with the same damn piano score played ad infinitum. Long lingering looks over quiet dinner tables. And big permed hair 1980s style that deserves a credit of its own.
Extras
This is yet another one of Sinful Mermaid’s bare bone releases. Apart from the film (Italian with English subs) all you can expect is a picture gallery of screen shots, not even a trace of a trailer in sight. One of these days, however, I would like to find out more about the guy who writes their DVD back cover blurbs as they are genuinely hilarious. Not only does he reveal the entire plot from start to finish, the info about the actors is completely useless and consists entirely of the number of films these guys made: “Gabriele Gori who appeared in 17 films”, “Jessica Moore who appeared in 9 films” etc etc.
Overall
Watch it if you’ve got nothing better to do and like this Italian sub-genre. Don’t bother if you need anything resembling a plot to keep you remotely interested.

The Film
My Body Burns is based on the case of Bruay-en-Artois, in which the body of Brigitte Dewèvre was found in a small town located in northern France known as Bruay-la-Buissière. Rumor placed the blame on the local notary of murdering the young girl and would provide strong enough gossip that he was eventually brought to trail for the killing. Litigation was overseen by Judge Henri Pascal, who dismissed the charges, much to the chagrin of the French public.
Furious over the mishandling of the case, Pallardy began filming MY BODY BURNS (Dossier érotique d'un notaire), shortly after finishing his first feature, UNSATISFIED (L' Insatisfaite). The film would find Pallardy in hot water as it was removed from theaters after one week from numerous complaints. Similarities with the lead character's occupation to that of the accused, and Claude Sendron’s apparent stunning likeness to Judge Pascal, lead both men to bring charges against Pallardy. After talking with the distributor, it was decided that it was the use of the word “notary” that would eventually be their down fall, if the case was ever brought to court. As such, the film was stripped of the word entirely, mere days before being screened by those assigned to follow up on the complaints.
This action would explain numerous sudden cuts and jumps in the film as well as one massive error, found just before the film's 44 minute mark. In the scene, Georges Guéret and Jacques Insermini, both regular Pallardy players, are informing the notary of the dirty gossip that is being spread about him around town. There is a line of dialogue that is repeated, that is hard to miss given that what is being discussed is the notion that Claude is a "queer after young boys."
I thought that the film was slow and felt liked it was forced. The sex seemed forced. The rare comedic moments seemed forced. The drama was.. you guessed it. Forced. I know what Pallardy was trying to do, but when you force it, it usually won’t work. It doesn’t feel natural. It does win my vote for the least erotic film with the words Classics Of French Erotica on the cover.
Transfer And Audio
The film looks okay for the age of the original. I thought it came across as a little fuzzy and washed out. Not really bad, just a little noticeable. The subtitles were easy to read.

I don’t know. After my introduction recently to Danish Erotica I expected something more from its French equivalent. I couldn’t have been more wrong. This was more like the fare that Seduction Cinema releases under their Retro division.

The Film
Two elderly sisters continue to have their novels rejected by their publisher. They keep sending them out and they keep getting them back with rejection letters. There just isn’t enough sex and romance in them. They decide to translate their true life adventures with the romantic Count Johan and his evil brother Count Hubert. The only one who knows they are the authors of the book is their postman that they have confided in.
The novel is a best seller and the publisher demands to meet the author. The two sisters are ashamed to admit they wrote the book so they say that the author is their nephew who is out of town. It’s when the nephew comes back to town that the sex and hi jinks kick into high gear.
Just like In The Sign Of The Taurus, this is a well done comedy that just happens to have some scenes of hardcore sex in them. I actually watched this one first and thought, ‘Oh erotica. So, it will be that soft-core stuff like Misty Mundae does. Yeah, and then all of a sudden it was much more! Kind of threw me for a loop. This doesn’t detract from what is a very funny comedy of errors. Kind of makes me wish that Hollywood would take a page from the Danish film making book and do this from time to time. It would be scandalous, but I bet it would make a mint.
Transfer And Audio
This film is crystal clear, just like In The Sign Of The Taurus, and even though I couldn’t understand a word out of their mouths, the sound transfer sounded immaculate as well. The subtitles seemed comprehensive and were always clear to read.

Not much. Some stills and a trailer.
Overall
This, along with "In The Sign Of The Taurus", was a wonderful introduction to Danish erotica. A lighthearted comedy with a lot of silliness coupled with some of the more erotic, hardcore sequences I had seen in some time. It was a little weird to get used to seeing sex scenes that never follow through to their natural conclusion, but after a while I got the hang of it.

Escape from Hell

This was a Spanish-Italian co-production and it has all the necessary traits for a WIP movie, sweaty nubile women, evil sadistic prison guards and of course a transsexual (Ajita Wilson) biting the head off a snake! Director Edoardo Mulargia is at the helm here, able supported by Anthony Steffens and Luciano Pignozzi. This is an extremely rare piece of exploitation cinema with no MPAA rating to it's name and play dates for the film has proved impossible to nail down!
Women in Cell Block 7
"A Mafioso’s daughter goes undercover in a women’s prison to clear her father’s name. Stripped of all human dignity, the inmates submit to terrible tortures and sell their souls for a few hours of lesbian lust. A legendary Italian WIP featuring the super-sexy Anita Strindberg (The Eroticist) and the lovely Jenny Tamburi."
This flick actually has a great plot with the Italian mafia double crossing the New York mob and as a result a huge score of drugs has gone missing and in order to find out where it is, the suspects girlfriend is put in prison to jog his memory so to speak. But, there is more as the Interpol agent who is investigating the case becomes even more involved when his daughter is put in the same prison to get close to the girlfriend and hopefully find the truth!
Released in 1973 in Italy and directed by Rino di Silvestri and with good turns from Anita Strindberg and Jenny Tamburi, it was an exploitation favourite during the 70's with it being released in many countries under many different titles!
Like most Italian exploitation flicks, this delivers the goods!
The Hot Box
"Four hot American nurses are kidnapped by guerrillas and forced to join the cause. As the junta strikes back, the ladies are caught in a deadly crossfire. A classic American WIP produced by Jonathan Demme (Caged Heat) and drive-in legend Roger Corman and starring the seductive Laurie Rose. The revolution never looked so sexy!"
With Roger Corman producing with Jonathan Demme ("Silence of the Lambs") and Joe Viola directing this very loose Women in Prison movie is the most accessible of the 3 included in this package and the most fun! Four US nurses volunteering in South America are captured by rebels and forced to look after their fallen colleagues and fellow mercenaries! However nakedness still ensues and we get an eyeful of their charms as well as copious amount of guns, explosions and car chases!
Although more a "sexy nurses" movie, this is a solid production that belies its low budget roots, with Charles Dierkop being perhaps the most well known actor involved and will be recognised from playing Santa Claus in "Silent Night, Deadly Night"
A really enjoyable flick even if not a proper WIP title!
Transfer and Audio
Unfortunately full frame transfers are the name of game here with equally uninspiring mono tracks that prove difficult to listen to. Add to this the lack of subtitles and it can prove a little difficult at times to understand what is transpiring! However given their rarity, this can be forgiven and it's great to have these movies on DVD at all!
Extras
This is a 2-disc release with Disc 1 housing "Escape from Hell" and "Women in Cell Block 7" while Disc 2 has "The Hot Box" and a "Retro Shock Trailer Vault". The collection also comes with a very well researched 8 page booklet with loads of info on all 3 movies!

The Film
Being of both Italian and Scottish parentage, I’ve been a fan of the delights of the sexy bawdy comedies that both countries have produced over many years. With Britain I suppose being infamous for the “Carry On” films made popular by Sid James and Kenneth Williams and Italy for producing a myriad of sexy comedy classics which were brought to the fore by Lino Banfi, Edwige Fenech and Alvaro Vitali to name but a few! However Danish sexy spy movies (with added very naughty scenes) were not even on my radar until these new releases by Smirk DVD fell into my lap!
In “Scorpio” we meet Agent 69 Jensen (Ole Søltoft) who is working undercover in a local health food shop. His superior upstairs informs him that he is to get a new mission and help protect a US CIA agent who is transporting a secret microfilm and to ensure the evil Scorpio does not get his hands on it! Unfortunately, after a case of mistaken identity, an innocent guy, Andersen, is entrusted with the microfilm hidden in a bread role and subsequently all types of chaos ensues! This film really has to be seen to be believed, it’s genuinely funny, has engaging characters, lovely scantily clad girls and a game of pool that has to be seen to be believed. Also watch out for Anna Bergman (yes Ingmar’s daughter!) as Penny who plays very willing chamber maid and the Sinful Dwarf himself Torbin Bille as a midget karate expert!
In “Sagittarius” Agent 69 Jensen is now undercover in a hot dog stall until his boss calls on him as another international incident is underway! The Albanians have stolen some top secret blueprints and the Danish Secret Service must get their first at the expense of the Chinese and the Russians, however Agent 69 is as inept as ever and another agent Arnold is sent in his place with an equally useless sidekick Knud. Cue more hilarious shenanigans and cock-ups (!) as the plot unravels! Perhaps not as clever or well constructed as “Scorpio” this is still lots of fun and very much worth tracking down especially for the fabulous eye candy on display, the girls do not waste time in losing their clothes. Much of the cast from “Scorpio” are here again with Torben Bille and Anna Bergman both back reprising their roles! What both films have going for them is the inventive use of sex scenes and they never feel tacked on for the hell of it and for a film to be both sexy and funny while keeping your interest should be applauded!
Transfer and Audio
Smirk DVD should be congratulated for the effort they have put as the uncut 1:78:1 Anamorphic transfers for two films this obscure are fantastic. Colours are bright and clear and there is no print damage at all, importantly flesh tones are perfect! Audio wise we have a clear DD Danish Stereo soundtrack that is clear with no pops or hisses and the English subtitles are good and have been well translated.
Extras
The only extras on both discs are a stills gallery with some of the more arousing images from the films on display. A little disappointing but given their obscurity perhaps understandable!
Overall
If you are a fan of Eurotrash movies and Scandinavian girls, you could do worse than pick up these great little titles! A great effort from Smirk DVD and hopefully the rest of their releases will be just as enjoyable!

It's not everyone's luck to be born on Christmas Eve. But it happened to actress Edwige Fenech. The date which appears on her passport is December 24 th , 1948, and that makes her twenty-two years of age.
Twenty-two gorgeous years, may I add. Edwige Fenech is tall and slender, moves with grace and elegance and exudes class and culture to a remarkable degree. She lives in Rome , where a short time ago she moved.
“It was a talent scout who invited me to Rome ”, Edwige Fenech tells me, speaking Italian easily and correctly in a sweet, melodious French accent. “I took part in a Miss Universe contest as the representative from France and attracted some attention. I was asked to come to Italy to live and try to get somewhere in movies, and I accepted. At this point I'm very happy I came”
Luigi Cozzi: “But hadn't you already done some work in the French cinema?”
Edwige Fenech: “No. I had just had a few jobs as a photographer's model and had also done some bits in the theatre. The theatre has always been my passion, and I hoped to be successful at it one day. But the cinema came along instead, and I ended up here… I'm happy about it, however, because a whole new world has opened up to me – much vaster than the theatre. After all, that's what films are all about, isn't it?
LC: “Have you been in Italy long?”
EF: “Three years. It's a very beautiful country – in fact, I would say that Rome is the most beautiful city in the world”
LC: “Where is your family from?”
EF: “I come from Nice, just like my parents. I often go there to visit them, but when I can't get away, my mother comes down to see me. Mama is often here in Rome with me. She helps me, keeps me company and has a good time, because Rome is a wonderful city”
LC: “What do your parents think of the career you have chosen to follow? You have made ‘For Adults Only' type pictures for the most part. Wearing just the bear essentials”
EF: “They are happy at the present time and satisfied with what I have been able to do. They know it has been a hard, uphill road for me, and what success I have had has been gotten the hard way. You know, acting with almost all your clothes off doesn't shorten the road to the top. All actresses take their clothes off nowadays, but only a few get there and stay there. I feel I have arrived, and my mother is very happy about it”
LC: “But don't you feel embarrassed about getting undressed on the set?”
EF: “Oh, it's terrible. Especially the first times on the early films… I didn't know how to behave and I was frightfully ashamed. Then I resigned myself to it, rather I got used to it… after all these are things you have to do in the movies whether you like it or not. The public demands it. Certainly it's never pleasant to disrobe in front of so many technicians and fellow actors. I always have the feeling, when I get dressed again, that they are still looking at me as if I had nothing on. And I don't even want to talk about what happens in the theatres where they show my pictures… I went to see MADAME BOVARY again in a first run film theatre, and I turned as red as a beet when I saw myself naked on the screen. Meanwhile the audience began to get noisy and exchange unprintable remarks”
LC: “However, this always happens, in all movies, whenever an actress undresses. Italians as an audience are warm and expressive”
EF: “Yes, but it's not always like that. That picture (MADAME BOVARY) really upset me, but when I saw the scene with the nude buttocks in SOLDIER BLUE, I noticed that the public remained perfectly calm, wasn't noisy and made no remarks”
LC: “Well, excuse me, but that's not a very appropriate example. Candice Bergen didn't have much to do, erotically speaking, in that scene… if that pair of buttocks was really hers. Just talking about this scene makes her blush spontaneously. “I realise it's not a good film, but I also know that doing the role helped me a great deal in that it introduced me to the public by exploiting what I had to offer physically. All in all, I owe a lot of my present success to it”
LC: “Will you continue to accept these sex-kitten roles?”
EF: “If possible, no. At least, if the sex sequences are motivated and justified by the demands of the plot and aesthetic considerations, then I would say yes. But I shall say no absolutely to a picture which presents sex for sex's sake with no other justifications”
LC: “How many pictures have you made so far?”
EF: “Eighteen I believe. Yes, I'm not very satisfied with them, but I must admit they have all been important for getting me before the public and catapulting me up to where I am now. Now I am preparing myself to enter the second stage of my career, and I really would like to make a success with my talent and acting gifts rather than just with my beauty. I'm counting a great deal on a film I've just finished making, THE STRANGE VICE OF MRS. WARD, directed by Sergio Martino on the scenario of a thriller by Ernest Gastaldi. I adore suspense films and think this one in particular is very beautiful, full of chills and special effects.
LC: “What films are your favourites?”
EF: “SOLDIER BLUE, CROMWELL and THEY SHOOT HORSES DON'T THEY? Are the first ones which come to my mind. I adore Richard Harris as an actor as well as a man. I think he's great, magnificent – he makes me dream with my eyes open”
LC: “Leaving the cinema aside for a moment, what are your preferences in life?”
EF: “I lead a tranquil, sheltered life. I have a few friends – boys who go to university – solid citizens. I like music too and almost always listen to pop records – Jimi Hendrix and Otis Redding. However, when I'm alone and sad, I prefer to listen to classical music: it's more relaxing”
LC: “Do you live alone?”
EF: “I live in an apartment… which I must change, because I'm alone when my mother's not here. Do you know that thieves have tried to break in here twice? Now I'm looking for a new apartment in a safer area. It's the only thing to do, don't you think?”

Black Emanuelle Box Set from Severin Films
This March expect the first volume of Black Emanuelle's Box in a Limited Edition of 4000 Units. This four disc set will contain the uncut version of Joe D'Amato's EMANUELLE IN BANGKOK, the X Rated Version of the outrageous EMANUELLE AROUND THE WORLD, Giuseppe Vari's SISTER EMANUELLE and a newly mastered compilation cd of Nico Fidenco music produced by Claudio Fuiano called IN BED WITH BLACK EMANUELLE. Box comes with six poster art reproduction post cards from around the world. Extras will include interviews with D'Amato and Nico Fidenco, deleted scenes and trailers.

Edwige Fenech in Hostel 2!
Amazing news for fans of the Italian sex comedies of the 70' s, who can rejoice with the news that Edwige Fenech has a role in the upcoming Eli Roth movie "Hostel 2", with producer Tarantino impressing La Fenech with his knowledge of her movies. Quoted as saying that he "knows all about my films" she was only to happy to agree to the role. This will be a return to the big screen for her after many years as a producer.
